Syriac Music Choir in Rome

Syriac Music Choir had the honor to participate in HH Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visit to Pope Francis in Vatican City in June 2015. The purpose of the Patriarch´s visit was to draw attention to the Assyrian/ Syriac/Chaldean martyrs who were killed during the genocide Sayfo in 1915.

The choir performed special Syriac Orthodox hymns on three different occasions. Hymns consisted of Martyrs prayers and memorial services.
The first performance took place on Thursday June 18th, 2015 at. 18:00 in an ecumenical service in the Basilica della Santa Maria di Trastevere in Rome. Praying time was held in memory for all refugees who lost their life on the way to Europe. The choir sang the opening hymn and "Our Father" in Syriac, accompanied by music from the cathedral´s historic organ.

The second occurrence took place on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 10:00 in one of the private chapel in the Vatican. In this prayer service attended Pope Francis and blessed all the attendees. The choir sang Martyrs ritual in Syriac and Pope Francis enjoyed the Syriac hymns and said it was among the finest prayers he has heard. The third performance took place the same day at 17:00 in the Basilica of San Bartholomeo on the Isola Tiberina in Rome. The service was held by Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem and the prayers were for the memory of all the martyrs during and after Sayfo. The choir sang with the cathedral choir and sang martyrs rituals and hymns that are intended for the martyrs’ memorial.

Syriac Music Choir is proud to present the Syriac Orthodox church music in Vatican, Rome. The choir is looking forward to perform new journeys to present our musical tradition in other parts of the world.
